Jump Start: Word and Dance Play


Jump Start is a creative community project for individuals (ages 8 and older) with Down Syndrome 5and their families.

Jump Start is designed to explore the joys of creative movement and word play. Families will be invited to write and move together, share discoveries and find new ways of playing.

Workshop participants will be guided by Pamela Geber Handman and Melissa Bond.

Pamela Geber Handman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Modern Dance at the University of Utah. She is passionate about community-involved projects, particularly involving people of all abilities and all ages. Among the array of courses she teaches at UU is Teaching Methods, guiding university students as they teach an integrative approach to creative movement for public school. Pamela is mom to 5-year old Julian who has Down Syndrome.4

Melissa Bond is a published author, poet and journalist. She has won several poetry awards, including Best Poet in Motion and Gutsiest Spoken Word performance, and was listed as one of the Catalyst 100 in 2013. She has taught poetry and word play for over a decade and was noted for her contribution to the literary arts by winning the 2002 Mayor's Artist Award. Her book of poetry, HUSH, is published by Elik Press. Melissa is mom to 7-year old Cassius who has Down Syndrome.


Please note that there must be at least one family member participating who is over the age of 18. For each family, enrollment is limited to 1-2 individuals with Down Syndrome plus 1-3 family members (this term is inclusive – "family" as defined by you).
