Veterans Workshop: Colored Pencil with Chuck Gilliam

Start drawing confidently and beautifully in colored pencil with lessons from artist and instructor Chuck Gilliam. Get set up for success as you learn to choose the perfect materials for your skill level, budget and preferred subject matter. Put pencil to paper as you learn color mixing with luminous color "recipes" you can recreate again and again. Then, enhance your drawings with methods for blending colored pencils and using everyday items to add amazing textures and details. Move on to drawing selected subjects using techniques for underpainting, drawing shadows, creating an atmospheric background and more. You'll even get step-by-step guidance for drawing a bright image using a new layering method and tips for achieving true-to-life shading.
Portrait with painting

This class is designed for students wishing to learn professional colored pencil techniques and applications through concise modules that involve hands-on experience. A variety of subjects including animals, landscapes, still life, and portraiture are all covered as well as various colored pencil forms including wax-based, oil-based, and watercolor pencils.

Learn the difference between student-grade and artist-grade colored pencils and why you might use one or the other. Finally, practice controlling your pencils to create color gradients, tones and textures.

Learn all about color! Begin with creating the color wheel as Chuck helps you understand complementary and analogous color relationships and how you can use them to the best advantage.

Learn how to make the perfect bold and bright shade through a simple layering technique. You'll “paint” using all the techniques and tools Chuck will share with you and master shadows and shading throughout your painted subject. Finally, make your colored pencil drawing last with fixative.

Chuck Gilliam

Thirty-seven years ago Charles moved to Texas.  There he found the subject he wanted to portray the most – the West, with its cowboys, cowgirls and horses. The sights and sounds excited him and he worked to capture it on paper.  And so it began, and has continued up to this day. Ten years ago, he began to work in color pencil.  This medium allows for a great flexibility in execution. Details give you something to hang on to, at the same time allowing you room to write your own story as you look at the painting.  And these pieces are “paintings” in every sense of the word.
